A small but telling moment in my life was when my curls came in and how that changed my life. for real.
So (as many are surprised to hear) during the first decade of my life, I actually had super straight and fine pale blonde hair. My dad liked my sister and my locks long and so my occasionally trimmed hair hit about the shoulder blades.
Anywho! Around ten years old (IDK LOL - 4th grade-ish), I was very into reading mysteries and the cover of my latest literary adventure featured the quick witted heroine and her short blonde bob hairstyle. I was blown away! She was out there, in the streets (back room of school library) making a difference solving school yard crimes of passion...and looked *kinda* like me...so we (clearly!) had A LOT in common...and I knew it was time for a change.
So early before school the next morning, I begged my mom to cut my hair into a short blonde bob. She was hesitant as my father had not had a chance to weigh in...but relented cutting my hair just a little longer into a medium length bob.
I truly thought that was the end of it, but oh no!
- My father was indeed AGHAST at the shortening
- My sister followed up my cut with one of her ownthe originally intended Short Bob
- BUT THE BIG ONE - When I washed my hair the following day, it wasn't straight anymore. It started acting WEIRD and uncontrollable!
I didn't fully grasp the concept back then but in the years since many hair professionals have weighed in on my Curly Mystery. Seems like the likely scenario is that my hair texture had changed during puberty and the new hair growth was coming in curly...but quite a bit of the length was my old straight hair which kept it stretched and straight. Once my mom relieved the new curly hair at the top of the straight growth at the bottom, the curls popped right up!
It was still a long time before I really figured out how to style the curls that appeared the day after my impromptu haircut. See the Fashion & Beauty section for more curly hair content!
